There is usually not much to be feared from the pre-owned cars dealer if one sticks to the tried-and-tested official channels to obtain a used car. It is not to say that the one-man show, privately owned countryside dealer is not to be trusted, but it is safer to stay away unless the good reputation of the dealership is well known in their region of business, and one has good references for them.
What are these tried-and-tested channels? Usually, one is safer buying from the large, national franchises that have branches everywhere and where one can get on-site financing from the major banks. Pre-owned car dealers are accountable, offer a known standard of service and one has recourse if something goes wrong. In many cases, there are minimum requirements for the pre-owned vehicles they sell: these are often not above a certain age and mileage, are subjected to safety checks and must be “clean”.
Some of the advantages of buying from pre-owned car dealers who are a large, national franchise:

- Good mileage and condition virtually guaranteed.
- Fairly new cars that are often still under factory warranty.
- Comprehensive extended warranties normally available.
- On-site financing available.
- Presence even in the countryside.
When buying from smaller or independent pre-owned car dealers, try to find out as much as possible about their reputation and service experienced by existing clients, from the existing clients. If they offer financing through the large banks and finance houses and are approved by said institutions, it is even better. The worst-case scenario would be buying and old car that cannot be financed for cash from a dealer that do not conform to any of the above standards. In such a case, the buyer would have to be very knowledgeable or would have to employ the services of an expert to remove the risk associated with this kind of sale.
Many pleasurable kilometres can be enjoyed in a sound pre-owned car if a soberly considered deal is closed with a pre-owned cars dealer of good repute.
