Why would a new car be on a sale?  Why would dealers put whole lines on a new vehicle sale?  Surely, there must be something wrong with a car that cannot find a buyer at its normal list price?

Let us look at a few reasons why brand-new vehicles are put on sale:

• Usually, when a new vehicle sale takes place its because it is nearing the end of its production life and a facelifted or a new model is on the way, the dealer would not want you to know it.  He needs you to think there is nothing wrong with buying the old model.  How else will he sell it?  He cannot tell everybody to wait for the new model, because then he will never sell all the old ones in his stockyard!  In addition, to sweeten the deal, he will discount the old one and make you an offer you cannot refuse.  Thus, the sale price.
• Obscure, unpopular, eccentric and oddball brands do not have mainstream appeal.  They are often niche products and never top-sellers.  People perceive them as strange and risky.  In a booming economy, these dealers readily find adventurous buyers.  In a tough economy, they have sales all the time, to move units.
• Oversupply is also a legit reason for a new vehicle sale. Again, this tends to happen to slower-selling brands and/or model lines.  Sometimes a manufacturer’s projections are off and they end up with a lot more cars of a certain model on dealers’ ‘lots than people are actually buying.  These are usually put on sale to clear stock.  The factory could also give assistance with certain models, i.e. money available to use for discount, trade-in assistance, etc.
• It has happened that competitors have entered the market at significantly lower prices.  Manufacturers and their dealers then start to discount their player more to bring its price in line with the competition.  More often than not, the successor is launched at a keen price and at a lower profit margin, to better compete on list price.

In short, there is always a reason for a new vehicle sale.  If you are informed and satisfied with the terms, you can land yourself a very sound buy.
