Do you know what is covered by your vehicle insurance? You are probably aware that your insurance covers the repairs to your vehicle if you are involved in an accident. If the accident was your fault, it also covers repairs to the other vehicle involved. You are most likely also aware of the excess payment. That is the amount you pay anyway – your insurance only pays whatever is in excess of that amount.
Some drivers of very old vehicles, or people that want to save on their premiums, can opt for third party cover only, or third party, theft and fire. This is usually only applicable to old cars that had been paid up, since comprehensive insurance is compulsory for car finance deals. Third party is the minimum level of insurance cover and also the cheapest. It covers you against financial liability when you had caused an accident in which someone else’s car or property is damaged. Your own damage will be for your own account, but the third party’s damage is covered, even if you had hit a shiny new Mercedes.
Third party, fire and theft cover covers the same basis as the normal third party cover discussed above, but normally adds to this:
- Hijack cover
- Theft cover
- Cover against the accidental death or injury of third parties
- Fire cover
- Lightning cover
- Cover against damage caused by explosions
These scant types of vehicle insurance are only advisable if you drive a really old car that is worth very little and for which you do not have strong feelings. Driving without third party cover could ruin you, because it would make you liable for the damage to a third party’s car or property and this could run into hundreds of thousands of Rands.
