GOOGLE HISTORY

GOOGLE HISTORY

The Google history reads like something from a science fiction book. It all began in 1995 when Larry Page and Sergey Brin met while still studying. They were not at all fond of each other, but once they found they had a vision in common for the development of a system whereby the infinity of information in the world, could be made accessible to almost everyone in an organized and easy to use way, they gave the Google history some color.

They worked on a search engine until 1998 to be called BackRub based on its ability to link back. They needed a buyer for their invention and as is the case with all students; money was a major problem for further development of their brilliant idea. They looked for financial backing and succeeded in obtaining their first $100 000 check made out to Google Inc. which did not yet exist. They had the money, but no place to bank it. They placed their post graduate studies on hold and raised some more backing. A huge sum was obtained in total - $1 million. This marked the next phase of the Google history.

The first office

The company opened its doors for business in Menlo Park, California in 1998. It wasn’t a huger office block, rather appropriately – a garage which stimulated their brain cells even more. Craig Silverstein – current director of technology, became their fist employee. In beta from the search engine already performed excellent with 10 000 searches a day.

Larger office needed by 1999

Growth exceeded early expectations and the company moved to University Avenue in Palo Alto since the garage became too small for eight workers. The search engine already received half a million queries every day. Red Hat became their first commercial search partner.

The next big funding in the Google history came in June that year when two large corporations, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, as well as Sequoia Capital joined in. Key players from large names in the Internet field joined the employee and director’s ranks at the still young company, meaning larger offices would soon be needed. The company moved to Mountain View in California. Close to the end of 1999 came the next step in the Google history – it was not longer a beta search engine.

The year 2000 marked for innovation

The informal office culture at the new head office spurred innovative thinking and brought about the Google Directory. Another bold step was taken with the introduction to wireless searching facilities for users and yet another was to come – 10 language search facility.

The Webby as well as the People’s Award were bestowed upon the company. It however, only marked the first of many more to come. The start of Adwords came into being and the company no longer only relied on funding, but could generate its own income. Yahoo! And the still growing company became partners half way through 2000. This meant only good things for users. With millions of enquiries daily the company was fast becoming the most popular search engine around.

New innovations and services keep the company going

The early days of the company marked its development into a sizable enterprise. The next six years marked the fastest growing search engine development and rolling out of new innovations and technology. The search engine already handled more than 100 million searches a day by the end of 2000. The Toolbar for more accessibility anywhere on the Net, came into being and so did many other features including:

  • Spread of wireless search facilities around the globe.

  • Taking over the Usenet archives and making the messages accessible.

  • Development of Image, news and catalog searches.

By the end of 2003 the company had already indexed 3 billion documents on the Internet. The figure has already grown over 25 billion at present. With innovations coming to the front such as Froogle, map search, Gmail, photo editing, sitemap and scores more, the Google history has fast tracked passed any other search engine development to become the most important player in the Internet.
