Google AdSense
All About Google AdSense
The easiest and simplest way for your website to maximize revenue is by means of Google AdSense. An ad serving application run by Google, AdSense was first developed by the privately held company Oingo Inc. in 1998 under the guidance of Gilad Elbaz and Adam Weissman. What they did was develop a proprietary search algorithm that was built upon an underlying lexicon named WordNet which used the meanings of words as a calculating factor. In 2001 Oingo changed the name of their application to Applied Semantics and in April 2003 Google acquired it from them for the price of US$102 million. Quite recently Google AdSense made those of us in the online industry quite happy with their announcement that they will now be offering new features which included the ability to “enable multiple networks to display ads”.

But what exactly is Google AdSense?
To put into laymen’s terms it is an ad serving application system that allows you as a website owner to add advertisers’ ads on your website and make money out of the deal. Administered by Google, Google AdSense creates a list of websites that is relevant to the individual advertiser’s product or service, in other words our clients at iLead Online, from which they can choose the specific websites they would like to advertise their product or service on, i.e. your website. This can be done either by means of a pay per-click or pay per-impression basis. But let’s get into the more technical aspects of this application.
Ads can be seen as a valuable source of information and from our experience at iLead Online is the ideal way to connect people with our clients who offer specific products, services and ideas that the individual might find of interest.
— J. Nortje (Marketing Director)
If you are a website owner and you want to join in this venture you need to begin by registering your website with the Google AdSense program after which your webmaster will then have to insert the AdSense JavaScript code into your webpage. Now every time your webpage is visited Google’s JavaScript code makes use of an inline JSON to display the content fetched from the Google servers. There are different types of ads which we will discuss at a later stage, but for now we will use contextual and site-targeted advertisements as an example. With site-targeted advertisements the advertiser, which in this case is iLead Online’s client, will be making the choice as to which page/s we want to display our clients’ advertisements on and will only pay you according to the cost per mile (CPM) rates or the price we chose to pay for every thousand advertisements displayed. With contextual advertisements high-value keywords are determined by means of a cache used by the Google servers. When keywords have already been cached the advertisements are then served for those particular keywords based on the AdWords bidding system. After you have generated enough hits from your website Google will then kindly send you your cheque.
The various types of Google AdSense includes AdSense for:
-
Feeds: Google writes the advertising content into an images that are inserted into a feed;
-
Search: Website owners place a Google search box on their website and earn revenue when internet users make use of the search box to do their searches and then click on the advertisements. Only when the user clicks on the ads will the publisher be paid;
-
Mobile content: The same as AdSense for content, publishers with mobile websites are able to generate earnings by using targeted Google advertisements that matches the content of their mobile website;
-
Domains: Domain name owners are able to monetize on their dormant sites by placing advertisements on these domain names that has not been developed as yet; and
-
Video: This was generated for publishers with video content on their website to generate income by means of AdSense for video display.
