What is the Google algorithm?


It is the method used by the search engine to determine the importance of content and relevancy of a site to ensure that the user gets the information wanted. Google weighs each page according to certain criteria. There are two sides to the Google algorithm. The first is called text matching and is the process whereby pages that are highly relevant to the user’s query are retrieved. The second part is the page ranking system used to determine the importance of a site based on a number of factors. The two work closely together to help provide highly relevant results.

Page ranking in itself is very complex, but armed with the knowledge on how to make your site succeed with text matching can already help you to get to the top pages in the search engine.

A few of the keyword optimization methods followed by Intoweb for matching the Google algorithm


  • Title tag – as a lot of weight is given to the title tag, we include the keyword in the title tag. Since it works even better when there are other words after the keyword, we also sometimes include those, but limit them to a maximum of 40 characters.

  • Meta tags – unlike other search engines the description is not derived from the Meta tags, but from the first few lines of the text. We thus include both the best and relevant wording with the keywords in this section, and a meta tag description for all the other search engines.

  • Keywords placed at the top of the page – since the search engine places a lot of weight on relevancy, it spiders the top part of the page first looking for relevant keywords. We thus ensure that the rest of your page doesn’t have be so competitive by strategically placing the relevant keywords near the top. It is however, important to have them in context so that a theme for the page can be established. It is for this reason that we also have related terms in the top section of your page.

  • Keyword density – as a lot of weight is also given to the spreading of keywords throughout the page, we focus on getting the 6 to 10 % density required for ranking high. Our knowledge in the distribution of the keywords throughout the page and again close to the bottom, works to your advantage as we also know how to prevent over optimization.

  • Header tags and keywords – as emphasis is also placed on words appearing between the header tags, we try to place the keywords between them.

  • Bold and italics – if a keyword forms part of a heading or is placed in bold, it gets more weight. It is for this reason that we always place a keyword at least once in bold or in the heading. We do however, keep the fine balance of optimal against over optimization by calculating the total weight for the particular keyword on the page.
