Google Images
The Usefulness Of Google Images
We all know and have used at some stage the technology which Google has provided us with namely Google images. As the most-used search engine on the Web today Google felt the necessity to add this feature which was originally introduced to us back in July 2001. Since then it has evolved quite a bit. For us at eTraffic we found it to be an extremely user-friendly and useful tool to help our clients distribute the images of their products and photos depicting their services. When you load images to a website it has to be given an appropriate filename, text adjacent to the image, and link text pointing to the image. When a potential client does a search for a particular image Google will provide them with a number of images in less than a second, literally, in the form of a thumbnail with the filename, size of the image as well as the webpage listed below the thumbnail. When you click on this image it will not only display the image in a frame at the top of the page, but will also display the website on which the particular image can be found in a frame below. Here the user has the option to either enlarge the particular image or to go to the specific website directly by merely clicking on either the image or on the link listed below the image that will redirect the user to the specific webpage.

When you load your Google images you can make use of Google’s service the Image Labeler which allows you and us to appropriately label our random images that will help improve Google’s search results for these image. When you use the Google Image Labeler you will be randomly paired up with a partner who is at the same time online and using this feature. Together the two of you will for a two-minute time period be viewing the same images and providing it with as many labels as possible to describe individual images with precision. This can almost be seen as a type of game as you will be receiving points for each label that matches that of your partner’s, depending on how specific you are. At the end of the day the purpose of this service and feature is to help Google improve the relevance of their image search results for users such as you and I in a fun and interactive way.
In July 2009 Google announced and launched a search option panel for their Google images that allows us users to be more specific with the results we wanted from our Google image search. Do you want the image to be big, small, icon sized, just the face, photo, clip art, line drawing, colour, black and white or a specific colour? These are just some of the options you have available. Then there is the advanced search option. Now as you can imagine this allows us to be much more specific with the kind of image results we are looking for, making it so much easier for us in the process. You can now tell Google if you want related or non-related results to all or any of the keywords or whether you want the results to fit your chosen keywords exactly. This feature also allows you to choose the file type, colouration, domain, usage rights, safe search, ratio of the file image, size and the content types of the image.
