Most people who have a Google mail account swears by it, and for good reasons too. While commonly known as Gmail, Germany and the United Kingdom still refers to this free service by its official name of Google mail. Gmail is a free, advertising-supported webmail, POP3 and IMAP service which Google has so kindly provided us with that is very easy to use. While other email providers might bombard you with advertisements and in the process look and feel cluttered, Gmail’s style is one of simplicity. Another factor that sets Gmail apart from other webmail systems is its focus on search that allows you to search specific words or titles within your mails. This feature makes it so much easier for the user to find a specific email thread without having to go through all the emails in order to find it. The email thread or “conversation view” of an email also groups several replies onto a single page instead of showing each reply as if it is an individual email.

The Fun Features Of Google Mail

The same simplicity applies to all the various features currently available on Google mail including the Google calendar. Easy to manage, this free time-management feature allows you to make appointments, drag-and-drop events from one date and time to another, add events, and so forth. You can share your calendar with other Gmail account holders and change the setting to whether or not they may make changes to your calendar without your confirmation. The Quick Add button allows you to quickly add appointments or events to your calendar without any hassle. Then there is also the option of Tasks where you can create your own list of tasks with its due date and added notes.

Some of the other fun features of Google mail includes Documents. Here you can upload files and documents to share them with fellow Gmail account holders. Next to Documents we have Reader which is a like magazine you can design to help you find and keep track of things you find interesting on the web. A fun way to keep up with the times on everything popular, all you have to do is subscribe to your favourite websites. You can also see what your friends are sharing. Then for those of you like to be different you can personalise your Gmail by choosing one of the many themes available. The More Technical Side Of Google Mail

Google mail offers their account holders as much as 7350MB of free storage. This however changed on April 1, 2005 when Gmail celebrated its first anniversary by announcing that it will increase their users storage space to 1 GB, also stating that they will keep on giving people more space forever and as much as their server allows.

Behind the scenes Google mail’s JavaScript front-end was rewritten in 2007 and later released to its users on October 29, 2007. With the redesign Google mail changed their contact section, quick contacts box and chat popups. The latter was also added to the names in the message list and the contact list. With this contact application Google integrated it into its other services such as Google Documents (or Google Docs). The redesign and coding change however only allows users of Google Chrome, Firefox 2, Internet Explorer 7, Safari 3.0 and more recent versions of these web browsers to fully use this new code, while Explorer 5.5+, Netscape 7.1+, Mozilla 1.4+, Firefox 0.8 and some of the other browsers will only allow the user limited functionality, redirecting the user to basic HTML-only version. More recently Google mail added support that allows users to view their PDF files much faster within their chosen browser.
