The PageRank is Googles way of determining how important your website
is, and whether it should be shown in the top ten when searching for
terms found on your website. Many people ask what is the PageRank and
how is it calculated? Lets start by understanding some basic concepts:
It is important to realise that the number of backward or reverse links
to your website is determined through use of the hyperlinks on other
websites. Should you use the link:website from www.google.co.za, the
results return not all links, but just those links that have value in
the calculation of your websites pagerank. The Google ToolBar can be
used to find out your and your competitors pagerank, and which can be
downloaded from toolbar.google.com. The PageRank (PR) of a page ranges
from 0 (not important) to 10 (very important).
On the Google website, PageRank is explained as: PageRank relies on the
uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure
as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google
interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page
B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a
page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast
by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to
make other pages "important."
So what Google sees as an important website will receive a higher
PageRank, which Google calculates when it crawls that website. Important
pages still need to match your query, so Google uses both PageRank and
text searching techniques to find pages that are actually more relevant
to your search. Google is clever and does not simply look at the number
of times a term appears on your website, but examines all aspects of the
page's content and also the content of the websites linking to it to
decide if it's a high ranking result to your query.

Since the Google PageRank revolves around links popularity of your
website, the Google PageRank is calculated as follows: the PageRank
value of the referring page is divided by the number of hyperlinks found
on that page, so the higher the referring websites PageRank and the
lower the number of hypterlines found on the page, the more important or
higher pagerank is assigned to your website.
In summary, your websites PageRank is dependent upon hyperlinks to your
website, and lessened by the number of links to other sites on that
page. A hyperlink to your website will have the best impact on your
PageRank if:
The website linking to your website has a high PageRank.
The number of hyperlinks on that page is low, try to have just the one link to your site. A site with a high PageRank and a large number of outbound links can be just a waste of time and not regarded by Google.
In order to increase your PageRank, get as many hyperlinks pointing to
your website from websites with a high PageRank and a low number of
links. Theoretically it is possible to get a PageRank of 100%, but does
require a massive amount of work. Typically a pagerank of 4 is quite
good, and 5 would be brilliant and where you should aim. A ranking of 6
would mean that you are in an elite group of websites, which is rare,
and 8 and above is incredible and almost impossible.
The best way to improve your online marketing position
is to hire an ISP such as Intoweb Design to work
consistently, every month, on your website and to
use their vast resources of link pools to obtain
a better ranking. This is difficult to impossible
to do on your own, as only ISPs have vast amount
of domain names available for linking to your website
and also have a high pagerank themselves which they
use to add weight to your website.
